The object is Block 1 of a building ensemble composed of four parts located in Cologne MediaPark. The latter is an above-ground car-free area on 20 ha of land located only 1.5 km away from Cologne Cathedral, the old part of the city and the Rhine. Individual buildings are arranged in a star-shape around a central plaza and connected to each other via pedestrian pathways. A lake in front of the plaza serves as an extended forecourt and transition to the new district as well as a keeping the noise of the city's ringroad at bay.  KölnTurm is a solitary tower designed by Jean Nouvel, Paris. The skyscraper is the tallest office building in Cologne, making it a central landmark of the MediaPark. Apart from offices, the tower completed in 2001 also accommodates conference and restaurant facilities. The tower has 43 storeys proper above ground level and 2 below, all connected by six elevators. An antenna tower of the broadcasting institution WDR is located at the top of the building. The total height of the object designated as Building Part D including the antenna on the roof is 165.48 m. It is composed of a steel concrete frame structure with a solid central construction. A new technique for achieving a special reflecting effect is implemented in the glass façade of the building: images applied by screen printing and fired to the glass vary in form and colour depending on the light. Motives include Cologne Cathedral and the silhouette of the old part of the city. Building ensemble "Block 1" is made up of KölnTurm, the NH Hotel Köln MediaPark and the building "Im MediaPark 8a". These are directly connected to each other in the lower floors, but not in floors 2 to 7. The stylised clouded sky printed on the façade of the NH Hotel makes the hotel and KölnTurm appear as one entity from the outside. The hotel offers 215 stylish rooms and 2 suites, as well as a fitness club, restaurant and wellness area. With seven meeting rooms and an appropriate hotel service structure, occupants of the office tower KölnTurm can also take advantage of the services provided by the hotel.
